A 77-year-old McHenry man has been charged with several felony counts following a domestic dispute where he fired a gun with the apparent intent to intimidate his family members, according to police reports. Raymond V. Kanarowski now faces multiple charges in connection with the incident that occurred on Sunday evening in the 600 block of Silbury Court, as the McHenry Police Department stated in a Monday morning announcement.

In a detailed press release, McHenry Police Chief John R. Burk identified the charges as two Class X felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, along with additional allegations of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and aggravated assault. These latter charges are classified as Class 4 felonies, Lake McHenry Scanner reported. Kanarowski was arrested after police responded to the residence around 8:30 p.m., where no injuries were reported as a result of the gunfire.

Authorities allege that during the dispute, Kanarowski discharged a firearm in the direction of his 75-year-old spouse and 46-year-old daughter. "During the dispute, Kanarowski pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds," Chief Burk said in a statement obtained by WGN-TV. Kanarowski was taken into custody at the scene without further incident.

The criminal complaint elucidates that Kanarowski placed a 9 mm Glock handgun behind his wife before firing off several rounds to instill fear. He is also accused of aiming the Glock at his daughter and firing with the same intent, as detailed by court records. Following the incident, the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office has filed a petition to detain Kanarowski until trial, a hearing for which is scheduled later in the week.
