In a sequence of high-stress incidents, multiple juveniles in Memphis have been arrested in connection with a spate of carjackings. The Memphis Police Department reported that on Thursday, two males armed with guns carjacked a white 2007 Honda Pilot at a Citgo Gas Station on Old Austin Peay Highway. The following day, an Uber driver was similarly threatened by two males who commandeered his Toyota Corolla.
These events culminated on Friday, when officers, aiming to swiftly act, observed the stolen Toyota Corolla at the Creekside Meadows Apartments. The driver refused to yield to the police, instigating a high-speed chase that ended with the vehicle crashing into a mailbox on Allen Road. All five male occupants fled but were subsequently apprehended following a foot chase. One of the suspects was found to be in possession of a bottle containing multicolored pills believed to be Ecstasy.
The repercussions for the juveniles were severe, with charges including Theft of Property, Evading Vehicle Pursuit, and Possession of a Controlled Substance levelled against a 17-year-old male. Two 15-year-olds also faced charges of Theft of Property and Evading Foot Pursuit. A second 17-year-old male was hit with multiple charges, including Carjacking and Employment of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, according to the Memphis Police Department's post.
