A 43-year-old Mexican national, Enrique Melendez-Saldivar, has been convicted for the eighth time of illegally entering the United States, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. Melendez-Saldivar's latest attempt to cross the border occurred on December 19, 2024, near Los Ebanos, Texas, when he was apprehended by authorities, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
During a brief one-hour bench trial, Chief U.S. District Judge Randy Cra+ne found Melendez-Saldivar guilty beyond reasonable doubt. An investigation confirmed that Melendez-Saldivar is not a U.S. citizen and he had a prior conviction for the same offense. The defense's argument, claiming violation of Melendez-Saldivar’s rights due to alleged excessive use of force during arrest, failed to sway Judge Crane, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Border Patrol and the FBI led the investigation that culminated in Melendez-Saldivar's trial and subsequent conviction. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose A. Garcia and falls under a broader federal effort dubbed Operation Take Back America. This initiative aims to combat illegal immigration and dismantle transnational criminal organizations, as outlined in the U.S. Attorney's Office announcement.
Melendez-Saldivar, who attempted to resist and evade arrest, now faces serious consequences. He has been in custody since his arrest and awaits sentencing scheduled for July 21. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine reaching $250,000, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
