As the Memorial Day weekend nears, Michigan motorists are encountering a spike in gas prices, with a 12-cent increase since last week bringing the average cost for regular unleaded fuel to $3.18 per gallon, as per the American Automobile Association (AAA). Despite this uptick, the rates show a drop from last year, when drivers were paying 38 cents more per gallon, as reported by WXYZ.

According to Detroit Free Press, the rise in gas prices arrives at a moment when an estimated 39.4 million Americans are preparing for holiday travel, of which 1.2 million are from Michigan who plan to take their vehicles for journeys of at least 50 miles or more, and with the economy's current state, every cent counts as households maneuver to conserve their spending, Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury Secretary, pointed out on television that under Trump, gasoline was supposedly priced lower than what it now stands at, an assertion made on programs such as CNN's "State of the Union" and NBC's "Meet the Press".

The fluctuating gas prices have found their way into political dialogues as well, with officials from the Trump administration highlighting them as a key aspect of the economic landscape. "Many drivers across Michigan are seeing higher gas prices," said Adrienne Woodland, a spokeswoman for AAA, in a statement obtained by the Detroit Free Press, she added that despite these increases, the current prices are still more budget-friendly compared to last year's holiday period. Furthermore, the comparison to last year's fuel costs might offer some relief to motorists, the cost remains significantly above Trump's earlier campaign assertions where he envisioned gas prices as low as $1.87 per gallon.

Across the state of Michigan, gas price variations indicate that drivers in Lansing are paying the highest average at $3.28 per gallon, while Traverse City reports the lowest average at $2.95 per gallon, according to pricing details shared by Detroit Free Press.

Local gas price fluctuations may be influenced by oil market trends and consumer fuel demand, especially as national supply tightens. These changes are tied to broader market factors, including crude oil trading, which recently closed at $63.15 per barrel, and a reported production decrease averaging 9.4 million barrels per day, this information according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) data, as Upper Michigan Source reported.
