A zoo employee at Wilderness Trails Zoo in Birch Run, Michigan, was injured after a bobcat scratched her during routine enclosure maintenance. The trained carnivore keeper was placing enrichment items, such as fresh grass and catnip, in the bobcat's habitat when the animal unexpectedly scratched her, as MidMichiganNow reported.
According to CBS News, despite following safety protocols and receiving rigorous training, the zookeeper sustained a 9-millimeter laceration to her head and hand. Emergency services were called, and she received medical attention. "This was a rare and unfortunate accident, but not the result of negligence by staff, policy, or the animal. Interactions such as this, while uncommon, can occur even with domestic animals, particularly during inclement weather when natural animal behaviors may be heightened," the zoo said in a news release.
A second staff member was present during the incident and was able to intervene quickly. At no point did the bobcat pose a risk to the public or attempt to escape its enclosure. The injuries were deemed non-life-threatening, and the keeper required stitches for the primary cut, with a few additional superficial scratches, as per WNEM.
The bobcat involved is reported to be in good health and remains under routine observation. The zoo has reviewed the incident and has determined no procedural changes are necessary at this time. The injured employee is recovering and doing well. The zoo emphasized its commitment to safety and acknowledged the inherent risks of zookeeping and animal care.
