Milwaukee will celebrate its 21st annual Pride Parade with a notable figure from the world of professional sports leading the charge. Luke Prokop, a defenseman for the Milwaukee Admirals, will take on the role of grand marshal for the 2025 parade, set to move through the Walker's Point neighborhood on June 8. At 19, Prokop became the first NHL-contracted player to come out publicly as gay, and has continued to assertively use his platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports.
Selected not only for his historic stride in professional hockey, the 23-year-old Prokop is recognized for his representation and support of the LGBTQ+ community. "To be the grand marshal for this year’s Milwaukee Pride Parade is a real honor for me," Prokop told CBS 58. He further explained how he has met and been inspired by many in Milwaukee's queer community since joining the Admirals in 2023, and looks forward to celebrating the strides made in visibility and acceptance. This year's parade theme, "Remember, Resist, Rejoice," echoes this sentiment by not only marking progress but also encouraging the continuing fight for equality.
According to WISN 12, the theme encapsulates the spirit of remembrance for the struggle, the resistance against ongoing inequality, and rejoicing in the achievements of the LGBTQ+ movement. Parade organizers Brad Yates and Heidi Dalibor see Prokop's selection as aligning perfectly with these values.
The parade will commence at 2 p.m., starting from Second Street between Scott and Seeboth streets. As per Milwaukee Record, additional safety enhancements are expected to be in place, ensuring the event not only is a celebration but also a safe space for all participants. Prokop continues to be a visible figure in the sports world, having been the first openly gay player to compete in an American Hockey League game, further solidifying his role as an important icon within the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.
