The Milwaukee Police Department has launched its annual summer initiative, Operation Summer Guardian, for the fourth year in a row. The 2024 version, called Summer Guardian 4.0, began this weekend and is designed to address seasonal increases in gun violence. The plan is based on data analysis and recommendations from medical professionals and includes community input gathered through surveys conducted before and after the operation.

According to Milwaukee Police Department's Facebook post, the operation includes an increased police presence in 30 neighborhoods identified in collaboration with the Medical College of Wisconsin. These areas, such as Muskego Way and North Division, were selected based on gun violence data. Officers assigned to the operation have received training focused on fair, impartial, and constitutional policing. The department aims to measure success not only through enforcement but also through a reduction in gun-related incidents.

The initiative also targets illegal firearm possession among minors and includes both enforcement and youth outreach efforts. Milwaukee Police Department is working with local organizations to help connect with residents and provide additional support. A forum will be held after the operation to review its outcomes and gather further feedback.
