In a recent operation by the Minneapolis Police Department's 1st Precinct Community Response Team (CRT), with backup from the MPD SWAT, an armed suspect was arrested after attempting to evade capture in a rather unusual way. According to a social media post by the MPD, the individual, who had earlier threatened a tow truck driver with a handgun, tried to flee police by climbing out of a third-story window on the 700 block of 16th Street East.
The situation, which could have gone south real fast, was de-escalated by officers who managed to talk the suspect back inside before any potential leap. While making the precarious climb, the suspect inadvertently dropped a bag containing a firearm equipped with a high-capacity “drum” magazine. As apprehended by the officers at the scene, this individual, prohibited from owning firearms, was booked into Hennepin County Jail.
The MPD lauded the exceptional efforts of the involved officers in preventing the escape of the suspect and in securing another illegal gun. "Excellent teamwork by our officers in safely apprehending a dangerous individual and taking another illegal gun off the streets," the MPD expressed on their Facebook page. The suspect now faces charges for his actions and possession of the firearm.
The Minneapolis community has seen its share of tension involving police action, but this incident illustrates a scenario where a potential disaster was averted through strategic communication and tactical precision. Details on the suspect's identity and the charges they face have not been publicly released. The Minneapolis Police Department continues to collaborate with community leaders and organizations to address violence and promote safety across the city.
