Minneapolis resident, Robert James Levi, 22, has been hit with serious federal charges for his alleged involvement in producing child pornography and engaging in coercive activities with a minor, as per an announcement by Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa D. Kirkpatrick. Levi, who has a prior sex offender status, could potentially face life in prison if convicted on these offenses. Court documents expose a sinister pattern of manipulation, where Levi purportedly posed as a teenager to gain the trust and exploit a 12-year-old girl from another state.
Levi's disturbing actions surfaced during a three-year period stretching from February 2022 to February 2025. Despite being a registered sex offender since February 2024, following a conviction for Criminal Sexual Conduct in Stearns County, Minnesota, Levi allegedly continued to actively deceive and abuse the victim online. According to court hearings, he crafted tens of thousands of messages to entrench what the victim believed to be a "relationship." He utilized this fraudulent bond to coerce the production and exchange of child sexual abuse material. Kirkpatrick, reflecting on the case, pointed towards a nation grappling with "a sextortion epidemic" and vowed to firmly prosecute the likes of Levi "to the fullest extent of the law," as stated in a report released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of Minnesota.
The FBI's involvement in the investigation highlights the gravity of the case. Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. from the FBI Minneapolis expressed how the exploitation carried out by Levi is emblematic of the depravity that exists online."Pointing to the relentless threat predators pose to the well-being of children, Winston affirmed the agency's resolve to harness "every available resource" to put a stop to such exploitation. This unwavering commitment aims to ensure that justice is served and offenders held to the highest level of accountability.
Levi appeared in U.S. District Court for his detention hearing on May 5. He was ordered to remain in custody by Judge Elizabeth Cowan Wright until further proceedings can take place, effectively nipping any chance for him to continue his predatory behavior pending trial. The prosecution is being led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristian C. Weir. It's important to note that while these charges are serious, the indictment on Levi remains an allegation, with the need to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law yet to be fulfilled.
