This weekend, Minneapolis opens its doors in the truest sense—with the annual Doors Open Minneapolis event, providing locals and visitors an exclusive peek into the city's architectural and civic gems across public and private spheres, all at no cost. Happening on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the event celebrates the city's underpinnings and the people who fuel its continuous churn.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey championed the event, describing it as "your once-a-year opportunity to take a look behind the curtain to see how the city is run," and invited the public to greet him at the newly revamped City Hall, "swing in and say hi!" according to a statement on the City of Minneapolis website. One of the weekend's highlights includes the first public unveiling of the Minneapolis City Hall’s $34 million renovation, which, while still a work in progress in areas, offers refurbished Council Chambers, an updated HVAC system, and a sleek new press room.
Those attending will have the opportunity to tour unique sites such as the Minneapolis Eastside Maintenance Facility and the Theodore Wirth Home, which is offered courtesy of the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board—the city's initiating contributions span diverse functions and histories, all unified for this open house. The Doors Open event extends an educational vein with volunteer-led tours, trivia about the city, and overviews of sustainable advancements like the City Hall's green roof.
Additional stops on the tour, which differ in availability over the two-day event, include the Minneapolis Fire Station 1, the Traffic Management Center, and an intriguing Manhole & CCTV Inspection segment of Public Works; the Doors Open initiative provides an interactive map to aid participants in strategizing their weekend wanderings.
