The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is actively seeking public opinions on the pending rehabilitation of the Route H bridge over Middle River in Callaway County. Key to these efforts are plans slated for 2026, which include replacing the bridge's worn-out deck to ensure safe and sustainable travel in the years to come. Established in 1964, the structure beneath has withstood the test of time standing firm, while the surface above reveals the relentless wear of travel and time.
Community involvement is being prioritized by MoDOT, with endeavors to incorporate local input that could influence the final design and practical execution of the construction plans. Currently, the proposal indicates a closure of Route H at the bridge, with detour signs to guide drivers during the renewal period. It's not merely a time for technical evaluations but also for considering the rhythms and routines that would be disrupted, for a way will need to be paved, but first, by conversation and collective envisioning.
A crucial opportunity for locals to share their perspectives arrives with the open house scheduled for May 29. The event will be housed at the Carrington Baptist Church, as stated by MoDOT. This gathering from 4:30 to 6 p.m. is not framed by a structured presentation but rather an interval for attendees to engage with the project team, floating in and out as their schedules permit. The exhibits that are to be presented there will also be accessible online starting May 22 for those who can’t make it in person.
In tandem with the physical meeting, a span of three weeks from May 22 through June 12 will serve as a period during which public commentary can be submitted to MoDOT online through a form on the project's webpage, via email at [email protected], or through traditional mail addressed to MoDOT's office in Jefferson City. As the mechanism for civic exchange whirrs to life, MoDOT has emphasized that all inputs must be received, or postmarked by the closing date of June 12 to be considered in the consultation process.
