The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is implementing changes to U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City to accommodate a bridge rehabilitation project, and they're calling for the public's cooperation to manage traffic flow during construction. As initially reported by MoDOT, the project will cause single-lane traffic on a section of the route and will see the closure of several ramps starting on Monday.
However, in an updated plan to ease the travel burdens, MoDOT has configured to temporarily keep one ramp—the Missouri Boulevard to westbound U.S. Route 54—open. This decision requires drivers to adjust to narrower lanes and reduce their speed when merging. "At times, traffic may back-up significantly, or even come to a stop," warns the MoDOT announcement. The two other ramps at Madison Street and Christy Drive will, however, close as scheduled.
Traffic through the work zone will face an 11-foot width restriction, and speed limits in the area will be reduced to as low as 35 mph. These measures are expected to be in place until mid-October, although contractors have incentives to finish earlier. This is just the first phase of a multi-bridge project designed to enhance infrastructure across Jefferson City.
Work on the bridges over Linden Drive and Stadium Boulevard requires significant alterations to traffic patterns. "The rehabilitation of the bridges over Linden Drive and Stadium Boulevard" is set to proceed with one lane open at a time over Stadium Boulevard, while the Linden Drive area will see a head-to-head lane configuration, according to the MoDOT statement.
MoDOT suggests that those who travel this portion of U.S. Route 54 regularly should try to avoid peak traffic hours and plan for additional travel time. Motorists are also reminded to prioritize safety by buckling up, avoiding phone use while driving, obeying traffic signs, and by slowing down and moving over when driving through work zones.
