Montgomery County's Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is teaming up with Manna Food Center for their annual food drive initiative. Starting May 25 and running through May 31, county residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items on Ride On, extRa, Flex, and Flash buses. In a recently published announcement by the county, riders who contribute to the drive will be rewarded with a waived bus fare.
Having conducted the food drive for over 30 years, MCDOT is well-versed in the logistics, and the partnership with Manna Food Center continues to make an impact. "This food drive is a simple and powerful way to help our neighbors who are struggling," Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich was quoted saying. Elrich also highlighted the increased need due to Federal budget cuts, which have exacerbated the challenges facing community food banks.
Last year's drive proved to be fruitful, with over 2,000 pounds of food collected for Manna Food Center, as stated by MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. This year, they are aiming to surpass that number, addressing the heightened community need. Food donations are not restricted to buses alone, but can also be made at several county library locations, as well as at government buildings across Montgomery County.
According to a press release, the fight against hunger and food waste in the area is spearheaded by Manna Food Center. They have been pivotal in providing food assistance to residents through various innovative programs, including school-based distributions and a Farm to Food Bank program. "The need for food support in our community continues to rise," expressed Craig Rice, CEO of Manna Food Center. The organization has listed high-need items, such as instant oatmeal, brown rice, and canned tuna, on their website, encouraging the public to contribute these essential goods.
Montgomery County's resolve to combat hunger is strong, yet it relies on the proactive support of its inhabitants. To participate, residents can view a list of much-needed items and find drop-off locations by visiting Manna Food's website. The collective effort of locals during this food drive can make a significant difference in the lives of many, ensuring that no neighbor is left hungry.
