The Montgomery County Police Department set aside time this week to remember officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, in alignment with a national week of remembrance established nearly six decades ago. According to a press release from the Montgomery County Government, this observance coincides with National Police Week, a tradition that traces its roots back to 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation marking May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
As part of the commemorative events, beginning at 10:30 a.m. yesterday, Montgomery County public safety employees took shifts during a 24-hour vigil at the Public Safety Memorial in Gaithersburg to honor their fallen comrades. At 8 p.m. that evening, a candlelight vigil warmed the night, even though the event was scheduled to continue into the following day.
The remembrance continued today, with the annual Fallen Heroes Memorial Service held at 10:30 a.m. "The Montgomery County Police Department, Sheriff’s Office, and Maryland-National Capital Park Police – Montgomery County Division will honor our fallen heroes at the annual Fallen Heroes Memorial Service," it was detailed in the original release by the Montgomery County Government.
