The C.S. Mott Foundation is strengthening its commitment to tackling food insecurity in North Flint with an additional $1.5 million grant earmarked for the North Flint Food Market. The new funding brings the philanthropic organization's total investment in the project to $3.6 million, previously contributing $2.1 million for construction efforts in 2021 and 2022. The latest grant aims to cover costs associated with securing a supplier, inventory purchase, and staffing for the cooperative grocery store, which targets a year-end opening. ABC12 reported.

The much-anticipated North Flint Food Market at 5402 Clio Road is expected to create around 30 jobs, as shared by the market's board chairwoman, Brigitte Jackson. "This grant from the Mott Foundation means hope fulfilled," Jackson expressed. Her sentiment underscores the impact of philanthropy and community partnership on local development, according to a statement provided to ABC12. Despite earlier delays, more than 1,000 community members have joined as co-op members, ensuring they will have a voice in the market's development and operations.

Ridgway White, president and CEO of the Mott Foundation, emphasized the store's importance by stating, "Residents in north Flint need better access to fresh, healthy and affordable food options," MLive reported. The Food Market represents a beacon of hope for an area that has seen a vacuum left by previous grocery chains. The Mott Foundation's latest philanthropic gesture is to ensure the food market opens its doors successfully to serve the Flint community.
