In an effort to put the brakes on drunk driving, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) teamed up with NASCAR's Ross Chastain for a special event centered on road safety education. Addressing an audience of young aspiring automotive technicians at Nashville Auto-Diesel College last Thursday, Chastain, alongside THSO officials and other local traffic safety partners, made a pit stop to stress the importance of driving sober.

With a serious tone, the THSO Director Buddy Lewis highlighted the significance of the event: "Education is vital to improve the safety on our roadways," he stated to the Department of Safety & Homeland Security. Lewis went on to detail THSO's mission—reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities through community engagement and educational resources. Aiming young drivers, who are disproportionately involved in drunk driving incidents, the event focused on echoing this message to the demographic most at risk. Indeed, drivers aged between 20 to 34 accounted for nearly 47 percent of drunk driving crashes statewide in 2024.

The hands-on event included educational displays and vehicle simulations designed to drive home the message about the perils of driving under the influence. According to the Department of Safety & Homeland Security, watermelon slices were handed out to promote the "Use Your Melon" safety campaign, with Georgia Watermelon Ambassador Katelyn Lindsay present to engage with the participants. Moreover, the THSO was supported by a fleet of traffic safety partners, including Tennessee Highway Patrol and Metro-Nashville Police Department among others, all looking to steer clear of the rising tide of road incidents.

Despite the heavy backdrop of drunk-driving statistics, Chastain provided a more personal touch to the event. Talking to the students, he relayed the dangers of impaired driving, and his insights on maintaining safety on and off the track. This collaborative approach, engaging a celebrity figure and the young audience together with the offerings of melons, speaks to a broader strategy in traffic safety: combining education with relatable experiences to ensure the message is not just heard, but remembered and acted upon.
