A sinkhole-induced road closure at Shelby Park's eastern entrance on Davidson Street is causing a reroute for visitors until late October 2025. The Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation division pointed out that severe damage to the asphalt necessitated the closure for public safety, as reported by WSMV. The affected section of the road has begun to slide toward the Cumberland River bank, leading to an extensive repair process.
This closure coincides with another interruption, as the Mill Creek Greenway at Mill Creek Park has been closed off through today. During this time, the greenway behind the Lenox Creekside subdivision will be inaccessible from dawn until dusk, reopening to the public each day around 4:30 p.m. until dusk, as explained by an update from Metro Parks & Recreation via WKRN.
The necessity for the extended Davidson Street closure became apparent after nearly 6.3 inches of rain fell over a four-day span in April. This weather event led to a slope failure along the road's embankment adjacent to the Naval Building, causing significant erosion, according to FOX17. As repairs are underway, traffic to Shelby Park is being directed via an alternative route encompassing Naval Hill and Sevier Street.
While the inconvenience is notable, park officials urge visitors to plan for the detour's impact on travel time into the park. During the anticipated months-long repairs, Metro Parks officials advise commuters and park-goers to monitor updates and follow the posted detour signs.
