A New Orleans man, LaMichael Jackson, age 26, has been handed a nearly three-year prison sentence following a guilty plea for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentencing, which took place on May 8, was presided over by U.S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon and includes a three-year term of supervised release. Additionally, Jackson is ordered to pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
According to court documents, New Orleans Police Department officers witnessed Jackson to quickly cross the street clutching a Palmetto State Armory Model PA-15 pistol. When approached, Jackson fled in a vehicle but was soon halted by an NOPD patrol car. Subsequent to his apprehension, officers discovered another loaded firearm, a Glock Model 43x nine-millimeter handgun, inside Jackson's vehicle. His prior convictions for aggravated assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number prohibit Jackson from legally possessing firearms.
Part of the nationwide Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), this case joins efforts amongst law enforcement agencies at all levels and the communities they serve to aim at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The PSN initiative emphasizes several core principles, which include establishing trust within communities, supporting organizations aimed at violence prevention, concentrating enforcement priorities strategically, and evaluating the outcomes of these efforts.
The New Orleans Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation leading up to Jackson's sentencing, with Assistant United States Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit helming the prosecution.
