Travelers and locals alike can now enjoy a smoother ride with the completion of new passing lanes on US Highway 40 between Kremmling and Steamboat Springs. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), together with the contractor, Capital Paving and Construction of Englewood, finished the project ahead of schedule on May 8, avoiding interruptions that could have occurred with the impending winter season.
According to CDOT, the roadwork started in May of 2024 and was suspended in early January of 2025 due to winter conditions. The crews were able to quickly begin work again at the end of April to complete the necessary final touches including seeding, mulching, and laying erosion blankets in ditches.
The addition of these lanes on US 40, particularly running northbound and southbound just north of Wolford Mountain Reservoir, Mile Point 172 to MP 173, aims to increase safety by giving drivers the needed space to safely pass slower-moving vehicles. “This is a busy corridor with a lot of commercial, recreational, and local traffic transiting through,” CDOT’s Regional Transportation Director Jason Smith stated, as per CDOT. “This project enables motorists traveling in this area to pass safely.”
