The community of New River is grappling with the tragic loss of a local pastor, Bill Shonemann, whose death has now been officially declared a homicide. According to Arizona's Family, the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner has ruled the cause of death, with details of significant injuries pointing to a violent act. Found dead in his bed last Monday at his Cavalry Road home, the beloved community figure's passing has left residents in a state of shock and fear.
Despite assurances from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office that there is "no further risk or safety concerns for the community." The absence of a suspect in custody casts a shadow over this perceived safety. "I mean, we locked our doors last night. It’s just something that we are just not used to doing," Mike Anders, a neighbor and longtime friend of the pastor, told FOX 10.
The gruesome nature of the scene, where Shonemann was found on his bed with arms spread and hands pinned to the wall, compounds the heartache and bafflement among residents. "You didn’t see what I saw in there," a neighbor lamented to Arizona's Family. With the police still piecing together what happened and yet to release any substantial updates, a community awaits answers — and a sense of closure.
Memories of Pastor Bill's compassionate nature are at odds with the violent circumstances of his death. Described as always willing to lend a helping hand, his loss has been deeply felt. "Our Dad had such a positive impact on people everywhere he went," the Schonemann family said in a statement obtained by Arizona's Family. They recall a man who found joy in the simple act of walking around an airport and expressed his creativity through building machines.
