New York Attorney General Letitia James is mounting a legal challenge against the Trump administration over proposed healthcare funding cuts, stating that plans are underway to file a suit in collaboration with other state attorneys general. As reported by Gothamist, during her appearance at a National Action Network event in Harlem, James targeted her criticism toward the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and its secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom she colorfully referred to as "the guy with a worm in his head," referencing a past Kennedy anecdote about a parasitic brain infection.
According to Gothamist, the lawsuit aims to shield programs vital to low-income citizens, those with disabilities, and individuals at risk of suicide. James accused the administration of "attacking the most vulnerable New Yorkers" by weakening or eliminating social welfare programs.
The New York Post reported that federally aided initiatives such as the Head Start program, Meals on Wheels, and the World Trade Center Healthcare Program for 9/11 first responders are in danger due to the anticipated funding reductions.
James, who has been previously targeted by the Trump administration, is currently contesting mortgage fraud allegations raised by the federal government. Amid a measles outbreak, she also criticized HHS Secretary Kennedy's approach to new treatments over vaccination promotion, statements that go hand in glove with her office's broader legal confrontations with the president and his administration, as per the New York Post.
Despite the looming lawsuit, specific details concerning the legal action, such as the joining states or the filing date, have not been disclosed. A spokesperson for James' office corrected an earlier statement she made, clarifying that the reference to the "Health and Hospitals Association" was a misstatement and the intended target was indeed the HHS. The backlash from James' office comes amidst her defense of mortgage fraud allegations and a $454 million judgment she secured against Trump, according to reports from Gothamist.
The battle lines are clear as James continues to forge ahead with legal challenges against President Trump's policies, as she reinforced at the Harlem event where she vowed to her supporters, "You elected me to continue fighting on, and I will fight on," as reported by the New York Post. Legal action has been a recurring focus throughout her tenure, reflected in her support for NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams’ mayoral campaign as she aligns with political figures who share her stated priorities of addressing justice issues and supporting vulnerable communities in New York.
