The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) has transformed its green space into an interactive exhibit dubbed "Van Gogh's Flowers," which melds the vibrancy of Vincent van Gogh's artwork with the natural beauty of flora, as ABC 7 New York reported. Open until October 26, visitors can expect to encounter the vivid hues and textures that echo the Dutch artist's floral motifs, an attempt to recreate the sensory environment Van Gogh might have experienced while painting his iconic pieces.
Art and nature aficionados are in for a multi-sensory treat the exhibit isn't just a variety of blooms, it's an elaborate homage to how the artist captured nature's essence, guests can meander through a gargantuan field of both real and sculptural sunflowers, courtesy of French artist Cyril Lancelin, or immerse themselves in the magnified still lifes reimagined by sculptor Amie Jacobsen, who spent around four months on each creation, in an interview with Time Out New York, Jacobsen called the process a blend of technique and heartfelt effort.
"You've seen the paintings, now see them come to life in the garden," NYBG CEO Jennifer Bernstein stated, as reported by Time Out New York. Guests can expect interactive opportunities with plein air painting sessions and LEGO pop-ups, embodying the creative spirit celebrated throughout the exhibition space.
Michaela Wright, director of exhibition content and interpretation at NYBG, conveyed the ethos of the exhibition to ABC 7 New York, suggesting that the immersion extends beyond the visual delights, offering olfactory and tactile dimensions as well.
The botanical spectacle shifts into an enchanting nocturne with the after-dark Starry Nights affair, wherein visitors can indulge in drinks and music and, weather permitting, a novel drone show illustrative of "The Starry Night." The exhibit's multi-dimensional approach captures different senses and extends beyond the garden; the Peninsula New York's Van Gogh Floral Afternoon Tea offers a gastronomic continuation of the Van Gogh theme downtown, as described by Time Out New York, including painterly pastries and a champagne pairing, along with a ticket to the main exhibit for a comprehensive Van Gogh flower experience.
