The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is shoring up its boating safety initiatives by dispensing $580,000 across 25 different agencies in 21 counties, bolstering on-water safety and bolstering local law enforcement capacities. The grants, stemming from the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft, are a vital part of the state's efforts to provide a secure and enjoyable boating environment for its burgeoning water-bound community.
According to the ODNR, "Ensuring the safety of Ohio’s boaters takes strong partnerships," a sentiment echoed by ODNR Director Mary Mertz, who underscored the importance of collaboration with local entities, these grants not only support ongoing patrols and emergency responses but also the acquisition necessary safety equipment for marine patrol units. The list of recipients spans bodies of water as diverse as Lake Erie and the Ohio River, as well as various popular inland lakes and rivers.
Boating, it seems, continues to be a pastime of choice among Ohioans, with an uptick to 630,628 boat registrations in 2024 and a significant interest in paddle sports, registering 306,769 paddlecraft, the investment in waterway security through Marine Patrol Assistance Grants is a reflection of this growth and the state's commitment to public wellbeing.
The Division of Parks and Watercraft, responsible for the stewardship and promotion of Ohio's 76 state parks and waterways, manages the Marine Patrol Assistance Grants, these are bankrolled by the Waterways Safety Fund—a fund kept afloat by state motor fuel tax, watercraft registration and titling fees, and contributions from the U.S. Coast Guard. In a concerted effort to safeguard Ohio's natural resources while promoting their use, the ODNR provides a wealth of boating safety tips and resources available on its website, for everyone from the casual canoeist to the most seasoned sailor.
ODNR continues its mission to maintain a delicate equilibrium between the utilization and conservation of Ohio's natural riches, ensuring that these resources can be enjoyed now and preserved for future generations.
