Ohio's natural attractions have just upped their game with the introduction of the new Falls Edge Glass Walkway at Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park. According to an announcement by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), visitors can now boldly walk where none have tread before – suspended in air, over the park's Sylvan Creek gorge. ODNR marked the opening today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, debuting the 137-foot-long pedestrian bridge that boasts structural-grade glass decking and a snake-like "S" shaped curve through the trees.

The stunning construction hovers 50 feet above the water, providing a panoramic, if not slightly vertigo-inducing, view of Minnehaha Falls. "This project is the perfect blend of innovation and conservation," said ODNR Director Mary Mertz, in a statement obtained by ODNR's news release, emphasizing the balance struck between visitor experience and ecosystem protection. The walkway, supported by galvanized steel, fiberglass grating, and stainless steel cable railings, promises an unobstructed yet secure view of the park's rugged terrain without casting harm upon it.

Nelson-Kennedy Ledges is lauded for its striking geological formations such as Devil's Icebox and Goldhunter's Cave. Yet, the risk of environmental damage and visitor injuries has risen with the park's popularity. The new addition aims to curb these risks by introducing an alternative way to enjoy the park's geological marvels without stepping off the beaten path.

Alongside this elevated pathway, the ODNR has also installed interpretive wayfinding stations to guide and educate guests. Visitors can quickly learn about the park’s geology, wildlife, and plant life, providing context to their journey. The project came with a $1.68 million price tag, with construction stretching from December 2022 to this month. Described by ODNR as one of Ohio's most unique state park additions, the walkway's design meshes subtly with the surrounding environment.

The park, nestled in the northeast region of Ohio, is accessible from dawn until dusk every day, beckoning explorers to its new glass attraction. Paired with the reminder from ODNR to keep to the marked paths, the park continues to be a sanctuary, both for those who visit and the fragile wonders they come to see.
