Oklahoma Senator Carri Hicks has been recognized for her commitment to the state's National Guard members with the Oklahoma Legislator of the Year 2025 award. The honor, bestowed by the National Guard Association of Oklahoma, acknowledges her role as the principal author of legislation aimed at bolstering educational opportunities for service members. According to a statement from the Oklahoma Senate, Hicks's efforts culminated in the formation of the Oklahoma National Guard CareerTech Assistance Act.
The act, manifested through Senate Bill 31, is set to provide Oklahoma National Guard members with resources to more easily pursue licensure or certification through Oklahoma's CareerTech system. Hicks expressed her gratitude for being able to facilitate such support. "I’m so grateful for the opportunity to support our Guard members. They defend our nation, and help our towns and cities throughout Oklahoma during natural disasters,” Hicks told the Oklahoma Senate. “This is a way to thank them for that service, by helping provide the resources and education to achieve their potential, both in uniform and in civilian life. I’m humbled and honored to receive this award."
Rep. Judd Strom, R-Copan, who served as the House principal author for the bill, along with Hicks, was nominated for the award by Scott Irwin of the National Guard Association of Oklahoma in their respective legislative chambers. The recognition was given during the 67th Annual Military Ball and President’s Reception. "The National Guard Association of Oklahoma is grateful for the leadership behind Senate Bill 31. By expanding access to CareerTech education, this legislation opens doors to opportunity, strengthens our workforce, and invests in Oklahoma’s future," said Irwin, as reported by the Oklahoma Senate.
