The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department recently dished out grants totaling nearly $300K to support various veteran and war memorial projects throughout the state, ensuring that those who served will not be forgotten. A sum of $295,195 will be divided among four distinct projects aimed at either crafting new monuments or maintaining existing ones. These initiatives span from honoring the earliest patriots to acknowledging the more recent sacrifices made by our nation's armed forces.
According to the official announcement, the grants were awarded with an eye to both commemoration and education. A new monument will rise in Stanfield's Veterans Memorial Park, standing testament to the service and sacrifice of local veterans. Echoing the same sentiments, the Oregon Airport Memorial Gateway in Florence will usher visitors into a space of reflection and respect for those who have served in the skies and beyond.
Keizer's Ryan J Hill Memorial Park will now bear a Gold Star Memorial, dedicated to those who grieve for the soldiers who never made it home. Beaverton's Veterans Memorial Park is not left behind; a Revolutionary War Memorial is set to provide a historical anchor, connecting present to a past that laid down the very foundations of the nation. These projects, conceived by local or tribal governments for the sake of posterity, ensures that the memories of those who fought will have a place on public soil where honor due can be paid.
It is part of a commemorative effort supported by an initiative established in 2005 by the Oregon legislature. The competitive grant program aims to ensure the continued presence of physical memorials within communities. These memorials are intended to represent the history and contributions of military service members, spanning from early American conflicts to modern-day operations. Through these installations, Oregon maintains a record of military service across different eras by placing memorials in various public spaces.
