The Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division is calling on the community to assist in solving a case of illegal fishing in Douglas County. A wild steelhead, which enjoys protected status on the Umpqua system, was found stashed in the bushes near the North Umpqua River following a suspicious encounter at John P. Amacher Park on May 8, according to a report published by FlashAlert. The authorities are in search of a father and son duo, who were last seen at the park's parking lot before absconding, just before the fish was discovered.
Witnesses reported the pair was driving a vehicle resembling a Toyota Highlander, finished in a gray or silver hue. It's suggested that these individuals may hail from the Springfield area, frequenting the Dollar Hole on the Main Umpqua to fish. Anyone with pertinent information, or who witnessed anything related to the incident, is urged to reach out to the TIP hotline or directly contact Senior Trooper Kyle Bachmeier using the details provided by Oregon State Police. In an effort to maintain confidentiality and encourage tips, the program assures anonymity for informants.
The Turn In Poachers (TIP) initiative, as highlighted on their website, is a concerted effort that includes multiple stakeholders like the Oregon Hunters Association, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and others, working in collaboration to deter poaching and illegal fishing activities. As an incentive to foster community policing, the TIP program presents reward systems that range from preference points for legal hunters to cash bounties for reporting wildlife crimes.
The rewards, can vary greatly based on the species involved – bighorn sheep, moose, or mountain goats fetch a handsome 5 preference points, while actionable information on occurrences involving game fish and shellfish could lead to a $400 cash reward. These initiatives spearheaded by associations such as the Northwest Steelheaders and Coastal Conservation Association, mirror a commitment to preserving Oregon's vast and vibrant wildlife for future generations.
