Following Friday's severe storms in St. Louis, a significant number of residents remain without power, despite the efforts of Ameren and a cohort of regional utility crews working tirelessly to restore electricity. Fox2Now reports that, as of Monday afternoon, over 26,000 are still waiting for service to return, down from a peak of 164,000 outages. This comes after Ameren's crews have had to tackle 300 broken poles and extensive tree damage while navigating blocked roadways and even collapsed buildings.
The damage across St. Louis has been significant, especially considering that Ameren estimates a single power pole replacement on a clear day takes four hours under normal conditions. In the current scenario, it's "tough to say how long each power pole replacement may take," workers told First Alert 4. Crews from Illinois, Arkansas, Indiana, and Oklahoma have rallied to aid Missouri-based teams, collectively forming a team of approximately 2,400 workers. Their concerted efforts have already succeeded to quickly restore power to 76% of affected customers since the storm's occurrence.
Regions suffering the most extensive damage have been east of Webster Groves and north of Tower Grove Park. As per KSDK, Ameren acknowledges the dire situation with over 170 utility poles broken in a section highlighted in red on their outage map, indicating significant distress to homes, businesses, and public roads. Restoration times are expected to continue throughout the week for the worst-hit zones, with Ameren noting that "safe restoration times will be updated and refined as we continue to assess and repair damage."
Ameren emphasizes the importance of public safety during this time, urging residents to maintain a distance from downed power lines and poles, and to always assume any downed wire is live. Furthermore, in a bid to disarm potential exploitation by opportunists, they remind customers that a legitimate electric company will never demand upfront payment to restore service. For updates or to report any downed lines, Ameren Missouri can be reached at 800-552-7583.
