Motorists in Colorado Springs, prepare for detours: The Colorado Department of Transportation has announced that Powers Boulevard will be temporarily closed on the night of May 9. The shutdown is necessary to facilitate the placement of concrete on the south bridge deck of a new diverging diamond interchange (DDI). Those traveling southbound will have to exit Powers Boulevard at East Platte Avenue starting from 8 p.m. on May 9 until 4 a.m. on May 10, while the northbound lanes will close at Airport Road from 8 p.m. on the same evening to 5 a.m. the following morning, as stated by CDOT.
Weather conditions play their part, as the plans are contingent upon a clear forecast. Locals are advised to tune into message boards near the project area, which will provide any updates. Expect some single and double lane closures starting an hour earlier at 7 p.m. Uniformed traffic control officers and flaggers will guide drivers through the detour routes to navigate this temporary inconvenience.
For those needing to steer southbound, detours will guide vehicles west on East Platte Avenue, then south on Academy Boulevard, and finally east on Airport Road to reconnect with Powers Boulevard. Meanwhile, the northbound detour will reroute vehicles either left or right at Airport Road, leading them to the northbound Powers Boulevard on-ramp at Stewart Avenue. Additional maps of these detours are provided for visual aid, as detailed by CDOT.
Moreover, before the closures take effect, there’s another traffic shift to be aware of. Starting from 7 p.m. on May 2 until 4 a.m. on May 3, lanes will be realigned near the intersection of Airport Road and Stewart Avenue. Motorists should anticipate a reduction in lanes and should proceed with added care while becoming accustomed to the new pattern. Although the Stewart Avenue on-ramp to northbound Powers Boulevard will remain open, its configuration will be temporary,
