Puʻunēnē Avenue will be closed from Wākea Avenue to Papa Avenue on May 15, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., for restriping work. The closure is part of the Puʻunēnē Avenue Improvements project. Detours will be in place, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
During the closure, traffic will be redirected to Lono Avenue, Hina Avenue, and West Papa Avenue. A detour map is available online. Residents of East Kauaʻi Street, Kūʻula Street, and ʻAiʻai Street can access the area through East Papa Avenue. Traffic controllers will be present, and electronic message boards will notify drivers of the closures, as reported by the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
The restriping of Pu‘unēnē Avenue is part of a road improvement project to add lanes and upgrade traffic signals. Changes include the closure of the southbound merge lane at Wākea Avenue and a shift of all lanes near Kahului Baptist Church to the east. Traffic will continue in both directions. Hawaii Department of Transportation advises drivers to follow signs and instructions from traffic controllers.
