Municipal workers in Oviedo, Florida, stumbled upon a surprise guest dwelling in the stormwater pipes under the city's streets. According to WFTV, while contractors were inspecting a pipe for structural integrity, they encountered a small alligator casually making its way through the underground system.
The crews, tasked with ensuring the city's infrastructure was sound, decided the gator was not a bother to the pipe they were inspecting beneath Lockwood Boulevard. However, it wasn't just a fluke sighting, as a similar event occurred in 2023 when a comparable alligator was observed in the same pipe system during a pothole assessment. "The alligators can easily maneuver in and out of the pipes, and the Econlockhatchee River is in this area," the city mentioned as per CBS News Miami.
In another intriguing twist, this recent encounter was caught on camera, and the video swiftly went viral, capturing the 5-foot alligator "just chillin'" in the storm pipe. The city of Oviedo shared the footage on Facebook, racking up thousands of views. In a lighthearted follow-up, the city quipped, "He's back! … just chillin'." As observed in the video, the reptile appeared unbothered by the camera, even giving it what city officials playfully called a "serious side-eye" before disappearing further into the darkness.
Amused and engaged, Oviedo locals have taken to social media with a blend of humor and fascination. More than 5,000 views are racked up within a day, and some residents even request that the city set up a 24-hour livestream capturing the so-called "Oviedo Pipe Gator." Meanwhile, others are tossing around potential nicknames like "Pipe Puppy" for the subterranean resident.
