In a consolidation effort that carries the weight of history and emotion, the Roosevelt School District has begun the process of closing five of its longstanding elementary schools, including the venerable C.J. Jorgensen Academy, which first opened its doors back in 1957; according to an ABC 15 report, the Governing Board's decision comes in the wake of a $5 million budget deficit and declining student enrollment.

Community members have already initiated send-off events to honor the school's impact over the decades. Maxine O. Bush Elementary and C.J. Jorgensen hosted farewell parties where past and present students mingled to bid their alma maters goodbye with handprints on the sidewalk and classrooms transformed into nostalgic museums. Amidst this bittersweet farewell, Bush Elementary's Principal Heather Dunkley spoke of education's resilience, saying, “Today is to remind everyone we are educators, and that change is hard, but it’s a necessary step.” In a sentiment mirrored by 93-year-old Bob Rimer, who attended the Jorgensen celebration and was quoted in a statement obtained by ABC15 as saying, “It brings back a lot of memories. When you age, that’s what you have left, and these are all great memories, and great people.”

The closures, also affecting Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, John R. Davis Elementary, and V.H. Lassen Academy, have been attributed to increasing competition from private and charter schools in the area, coupled with insufficient funding from the state legislature, as reported by 12 News. There are plans, according to Principal Dunkley, that the closed sites will be repurposed, with at least one reopening as a magnet school, and none of the teachers will be losing their jobs as they are set to move to other schools within the district.
