A Pinellas Preparatory Academy teacher has been arrested on charges related to child exploitation. Lee Hughes, a 45-year-old third-grade teacher, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals following a federal investigation into his alleged attempts to transfer obscene material to a minor. According to WFLA, Hughes was taken into custody under a federal warrant.

Details about the indictment, obtained from the IONTB report, revealed that beginning around June 2024, Hughes was engaging with an undercover FBI account. He mistakenly believed it was an adult with a nine-year-old daughter, expressed interest in a “sexually open household,” and sent an obscene image of a male sexual organ, asking it to quickly be shown to the child. Approximately ten months of explicit conversations led up to an attempted meeting, where Hughes was arrested while carrying a teddy bear and intending to meet what he thought was the nine-year-old girl.

The school immediately terminated Hughes's employment upon learning of the arrest, putting distance between the institution and the beleaguered educator. Pinellas Prep communicated its commitment to student safety to parents. "The safety of our children is our top priority, and we are committed to supporting our children and families," a statement from the school explained as relayed by FOX 13 News. Resources have been made available through the school and law enforcement for anyone in the Pinellas Prep community who may need support.

Federal authorities have opted to keep Hughes detained without bail, citing significant safety risks due to the severity of the charges. Further compounding the situation is Hughes's access to children through familial relationships, including two children within the same 8- to 9-year-old age range as the victim he targeted.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges against Hughes could materialize. Following his transfer to Hernando County Jail, Hughes's future legal proceedings will further unravel the unsettling accusations against him.
