In a case that has sent ripples through Oakland County, Kelli Bryant, a 34-year-old mother from Pontiac, will face trial for first-degree child abuse and welfare fraud. Bryant is accused of abandoning her three children, a 15-year-old boy and two girls aged 13 and 12, in a state of neglect that has shocked the community.

During her preliminary examination yesterday, investigators detailed the harrowing conditions in which the children were found. According to CBS News Detroit, law enforcement officers wore gas masks and hazmat suits to enter the home due to the overwhelming filth and odor.

As reported by Click On Detroit, on February 14, responding deputy Quincy Curtis found the children in a locked room, greatly frightened and struggling with basic hygiene. The severity of their situation was underscored by the lack of dental care and the children’s confusion about how to brush their teeth or flush a toilet.

It was in this context that Bryant's encounters with her children came to light. "I sacrificed my children," she allegedly told detectives in interviews recounted by WXYZ. Bryant admitted to meeting the eldest child occasionally to deliver food but avoided any other direct contact. She is also accused of telling her children to hide from the police and detaching smoke detector batteries to prevent any attention being drawn to their solitary existence.

Witnesses, including healthcare professionals, have underscored the children’s neglected state. Dr. Smith, a pediatrician who examined them, expressed concern for their health, noting developmental delays and extremely low vitamin D levels. Dr. Smith's testimonies, as detailed by Click On Detroit, revealed that the routine for the children was disorganized, and their skin showed signs of poor care.
