Portland's City Council has officially confirmed the inaugural members of the new Sustainability and Climate Commission (SCC), a group set to provide guidance and assessment of the city's path to eliminating carbon emissions. The 20-member body is tasked with overseeing the advancement of the city’s climate agenda, with particular focus on ensuring progress for historically marginalized communities, said Chief Sustainability Officer Vivian Satterfield in an announcement shared by the City of Portland.
The SCC stands as an advisory entity that will work closely with the Portland City Council, City Bureaus, and residents. Its role also includes the creation and evaluation of the City's Climate Action Plan, detailing the steps towards the 2050 carbon elimination goal. In a statement obtained by the City of Portland, Vivian Satterfield expressed excitement about the Commission's potential: "We are thrilled to welcome this exceptional group of community leaders to the Commission."
This major move reflects Portland's commitment to climate action and consideration for environmental justice. Among the chosen commissioners, whose expertise and backgrounds are diverse, a strong emphasis on climate justice will be paramount. Community enthusiasm was evident, as reported by Portland's official news release, with 245 individuals applying for a spot on the Commission, which also saw 39 youth candidates show interest.
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson played a pivotal role in the selection process, appointing commissioners to four-year, two-year, and youth one-year terms, including alternates. The assembled Commission promises to bring together a variety of perspectives and knowledge, coupled with a shared dedication to fostering a city that's resilient, equitable, and enviably sustainable. "Their diverse expertise, lived experiences, and deep commitment to climate justice will strengthen Portland's journey to build a resilient, equitable, and sustainable city for generations to come," Satterfield told the City of Portland announcement.
