In Union County, two men learned the hard way that crime doesn't always pay, particularly when law enforcement is parked around the corner. According to a post from the Union County Sheriff's Office, earlier this week, Cordez Byrum, 34, and Antonio Staton, 55, tried to quickly abscond with electronics and other items—totaling over $1,700—from the Indian Trail Walmart, only to be thwarted when loss prevention staff called 911 as the duo attempted to leave the premises.
The quick response by two deputies, who happened to be concluding another case at an adjoining gas station, resulted in swift apprehension of the suspects. Byrum's attempt to speedily drive away from the scene was cut short without his accomplice, who was captured on foot shortly thereafter. It seems that in their haste to hastily exit, the 'Rollback Rascals', as they've been dubbed, split up, making it easier for law enforcement to capture them separately, as per Union County Sheriff's Office.
During subsequent investigations, officials discovered that Byrum, who was on active parole following his release from the Department of Adult Corrections, also had outstanding warrants for unpaid child support. Staton's rap sheet included an outstanding warrant related to prior fraud and theft. Both individuals were transported to the Union County Detention Center and are facing felony larceny charges for the stolen Walmart merchandise.
"Unfortunately for this daring duo of thieves, two deputies had just finished an unrelated traffic stop at the gas station connected to the Walmart parking lot," recounted the Union County Sheriff's Office on their social media update. Byrum, who is ineligible for bond due to parole violations, remains in custody, while Staton managed to post his $6,000 secured bond and has since been released.
