The Round Rock Fire Department has a new team member who stands on all fours and is covered in fur. Ivy, a therapy dog outfitted with a red vest, is on a mission to offer emotional support to firefighters. While she may not battle fires herself, she's fighting the stress and mental strain that her human colleagues endure. Ivy is a Goldendoodle working with the Round Rock firefighters as part of a program with the nonprofit Hearts4HeroesUSA, which specializes in aiding first responders.
The demand for such a support system is high in a county that's expanding rapidly. "Our department is almost 200 people, and the whole county is growing exponentially, so there’s such a demand placed on our firefighters," Round Rock Fire Department Driver Jody Virgne, Ivy’s handler, told Round Rock, Texas. As firefighters face a gauntlet of trauma, the inclusion of a therapy dog like Ivy has been recognized as a beneficial tool to help these professionals cope with their challenging work environments.
Before her commission in March, Ivy underwent the puppy equivalent of the AKC Canine Good Citizen certification, preparing her in areas such as temperament and obedience. The program she's a part of has garnered attention from both the National Fire Protection Association and the U.S. Fire Administration, which have acknowledged the importance of addressing mental health issues within the firefighting community. Daily training and living with her handlers, Jody and Ricky Virgne, who are both firefighters, ensures that Ivy is well-prepared for her role.
Her impact goes beyond her duties; she visibly uplifts those around her. Ricky Virgne has noted, "She’s been well-received," he continued, "Obviously, a puppy is loved by almost everybody. She has been melting the hearts of many of our members," he shared with Round Rock, Texas. Ivy's presence isn’t just another addition to the team but a source of comfort and joy to those who confront peril in the service of their community.
