Wentzville residents and travelers should prepare for some disruptions on their nightly commutes as the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has announced plans to shut down Route Z under Interstate 70 starting next Friday, according to a statement on the MoDOT website. The closure will be part of ongoing efforts to improve the I-70 corridor between Warrenton and Wentzville. Specifically, Route Z will be inaccessible from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily, although entrance and exit ramps at Route Z will continue to operate.
The reconfiguration is essential for the widening of the I-70 bridge that spans over Route Z, a project that aims to reduce congestion and accommodate increased traffic by adding a third lane in each direction this work is part of a larger initiative to reconstruct the interstate, which includes the stretch between Wentzville Parkway and Route Z.
The Improve I-70 Warrenton to Wentzville Project, a substantial infrastructural endeavor, was granted to contractors in November 2024. The project timeline indicates that construction could continue through to 2028, though weather conditions could influence this schedule. This development forms a segment of the comprehensive plan to upgrade nearly 200 miles of I-70 stretching from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
An investment of $2.8 billion from the state's General Revenue for the fiscal year 2024, as signed by Governor Parson.
