In a significant bust by local law enforcement, a traffic stop in southern Sacramento County led to the seizure of an alarming amount of fentanyl. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office announced that 54 pounds of powdered fentanyl were discovered during the stop, which took place earlier this week. The discovery was made possible thanks to the work of Sheriff’s K9 Ronan, who detected the narcotics.
Following the K9 alert, a thorough search of the vehicle revealed two duffel bags filled with 23 bricks of the drug. The suspect, 31-year-old Hector Nunez from Perris, California, is now facing serious charges. Nunez was arrested and has been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail with bail set at $1,000,000, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid known for its potency, being about 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Authorities caution that as little as 2 milligrams of pure fentanyl, a tiny amount, is enough to be lethal. Given the massive quantity seized, it could potentially lead to millions of overdoses, as reported by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.
Law enforcement's effort to combat the trafficking of this dangerous substance continues, with a variety of agencies involved, including SAINT and CalMMET part of the Major Narcotics Bureau. The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office emphasizes their dedication to safeguarding the community against the threat of illegal narcotics such as fentanyl. SSO-REACT, responsible for the operation, is a joint task force that combines the efforts of several agencies in the region.
