The city of Saint Paul recently hosted the 2025 Annual Summit for the Police Civilian Internal Affairs Review Commission (PCIARC), a key assembly focused on enhancing the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve. According to a city bulletin, the event held on May 8 at Rondo Community Library witnessed a gathering of thought leaders and community members eager to discuss proactive strategies for advancing the PCIARC's mission. For those unable to attend or wishing to review the proceedings, a recording of the summit is available to watch online, and feedback is actively sought via the PCIARC Summit Feedback Survey.
In the spirit of National Small Business Month, HREEO's acknowledgment of the critical role played by small businesses formed a substantial part of May's initiatives. Efforts to uplift local entrepreneurs included promoting the Central Certification Program (CERT), which aids small, local businesses, including those owned by women and people of color, in securing public contracts, thereby fostering economic growth and job creation. Interested businesses are encouraged to become CERT certified, making them more discoverable to city staff seeking certified vendors for certain purchases, as detailed in the recent announcement.
Simultaneously, Saint Paul has focused on health beyond economics, honoring Mental Health Awareness Month. The city's commitment to the well-being of its workers is exemplified through the Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) ordinance. The law mandates paid time off for a range of needs, including mental health care and recovery from abuse. According to the city's statement, this demonstrates a broader definition of family, acknowledging the modern reality of diverse and non-traditional familial bonds.
Aside from health and business, civil rights education remains a priority, with HREEO slated to host a "Know Your Rights" conversation on the Voice of Oromiyaa radio program. Scheduled for June 1, this discussion will highlight local civil rights protections, aiming to further empower communities.
