Following a distressing domestic violence situation that reportedly escalated to life-threatening proportions in Salt Lake City early this morning, the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has initiated its officer-involved critical incident (OICI) protocol. In a statement released on their official website, the SLCPD summarized the events that led to the deadly confrontation.
Police Chief Brian Redd, prioritizing the safety of a woman and her children who were in immediate danger, stated that officers were dispatched to a residence near Judith Street and Hudson Avenue after a 9-1-1 call was received at approximately 12:13 a.m. Responding to a violent break-in by an ex-husband in violation of a protective order, the officers were tasked with a physically daunting mission. During the intrusion, the suspect, a 42-year-old man, allegedly presented a threat that resulted in at least two officers discharging their weapons, leading to his death at the scene, as reported by SLCPD.
Although the exact location is being withheld to respect privacy and safety measures, the emergency prompted a coordinated response that also involved the Salt Lake City Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance. Despite the volatility of the situation, the woman and her two teenage children were reported not to have sustained physical injuries. As investigations continue, Chief Redd has expressed a commitment to sharing relevant updates while extending his support to those affected by the incident.
Chief Redd praised the emergency call taker's professionalism and composure under the extreme pressure that such situations invariably exhibit. "Their professionalism and calmness during this critical incident exemplify the outstanding teamwork we share with our partners at SLC911," said Chief Redd, as per SLCPD, recognizing the integral role played by the emergency services in crisis management. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, as per protocol, which reflects standard procedure in any OICI.
In alignment with Salt Lake City's policies, body-worn camera footage from the incident is due to be released within ten business days. Also, under state law, an OICI Protocol Team 2 investigation, led by the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake, is currently at the helm of this case. A public information officer was scheduled to provide further briefings in the early hours following the incident. Media have been assigned a staging area at 1100 East and Hudson Avenue, urged to avoid using Judith Street to maintain clear access for official law enforcement activities.
