The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has released body-worn camera footage from a May 12 officer-involved shooting, as mandated by Salt Lake City ordinance 2.10.200. The footage depicts a confrontation that occurred after a traffic stop led to a chase and ultimately, the shooting of 18-year-old Carlos Felipe Ocampo-Flores.
The incident began when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle lacking functional lights near North Temple and 600 West. The car in question sped away, threading through a train crossing and hitting several objects before coming to a halt. A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up a minor quantity of marijuana. When Ocampo-Flores was spotted running along railroad tracks later, the police pursuit recommenced.
According to the released video footage, as per the Salt Lake City Police Department, Ocampo-Flores was holding his left arm across his waist and maintaining his right hand raised, while appearing to have an object in his hand and assuming what was described as an aggressive posture. This prompted one officer to discharge his firearm. Ocampo-Flores was wounded but remained responsive, reportedly attempting to throw an object before being subdued and tased by the arriving officers.
In a summary of the event provided by SLCPD, officers cited that the suspect had kept reaching into his waistband and threw something at the officer. First aid was administered to Ocampo-Flores until paramedics arrived, transporting him to the hospital in stable condition. After being discharged on May 23, Ocampo-Flores was immediately taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail. Details of the charges can be found on the jail's inmate roster list. The officer involved in the shooting received minor abrasions, but no other injuries were reported, and he has been placed on paid administrative leave following standard procedure.
