
In a move highlighting the persistent issue of human smuggling along the southern border, Border Patrol agents in San Diego stopped a potentially dangerous situation involving the illegal transport of individuals and the seizure of loaded firearms. According to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the interception occurred near Jacumba Hot Springs when agents stopped a Ford pickup on eastbound Interstate 8 last Wednesday evening.
The stop led to the discovery of two handguns and an unserialized "ghost gun" style rifle, the vehicle was also carrying over ninety rounds of ammunition, including 23 rounds of 5.56mm rifle ammunition and 69 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and the Border Patrol agents took six magazines in the process the identities of the suspected smugglers were disclosed as one U.S. citizen and one Mexican national. The incident escalated from a routine vehicle check to a scenario involving potential criminal charges for attempting to smuggle two illegal aliens from Mexico into the U.S. and for the possession of unlawful firearms.
The suspects now face significant legal repercussions for their actions; specifically, the charges include felony violations regarding the harboring of aliens under 8 USC 1324 and unlawful acts related to firearms possession under 18 USC 922(a). The principal suspect, a male U.S. citizen, along with a co-principal who is a female Mexican national and a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, were among those arrested. In the CBP's press release, Jeffrey D. Stalnaker, the Acting Chief Patrol Agent for the San Diego Sector, stated, “These human smugglers and the unlawful weapons that were seized posed a significant danger to the community.”
