An 8-month-old puppy has survived what has been described as a "brutal stabbing" at the hands of her owner, according to reports from Cleveland19. The dog, named Ivy, endured life-saving emergency surgery following the incident, which was first reported on Saturday, May 17. The Perkins Township Police have identified 41-year-old Terry Thomas of Sandusky as the man accused of attacking the puppy.

In what was clearly an aggressive response to the young pitbull having an accident in the house, Thomas is alleged to have struck Ivy multiple times "with an unknown object," leading to severe facial injuries. The executive director of the Friendship Animal Protective League (FAPL), Greg Willey, said that they received a "frantic, early morning call" from Northview Animal Clinic staff, where the wounded animal had been brought in. "It didn’t look like a dog. She no longer looked like a dog," Willey directly told Cleveland19.

FAPL, which is an independent non-profit humane society, got involved to quickly assist Ivy. "I honestly could not believe this dog was still alive," as stated by WKBN, Willey recounted in describing the severity of the wounds. The clinic staff had to work to repair an ear sliced off and an extensive gash across the dog's face. After Thomas signed Ivy over to humane officers, the veterinary team at Northview was authorized to begin the needed surgery to save the young pitbull’s life.

The Perkins Township Police acted on the evidence presented by FAPL's humane team to arrest Thomas, placing him in the Erie County Jail for a felony charge of animal cruelty, as detailed in a social media post by the Perkins Township Police Department. Ivy's recovery is expected to be lengthy, but the puppy is forecast to recover from her injuries. While the case unfolds, it serves as a poignant reminder of the responsibilities and compassion required in pet ownership.
