The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office, tapping into a new law to combat organized retail theft, has charged four individuals with a spate of burglaries at Home Depot stores across Northern California. According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, the suspects alleged to be part of the burglary crew hit close to 200 stores within a four-month period, traversing from Sacramento through San Jose to Santa Cruz in a textbook example of brazen criminal continuity.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office orchestrated a takedown that led to the arrest of Adolfo Herrera, 45, Wilmer Ayala, 43, Daniel Resendiz, 21, and Jose Martinez, 28. The arrest operation also involved raids at a storage facility and various homes across the Bay Area, uncovering tens of thousands of dollars' worth of stolen merchandise, including power tools and blades, as detailed by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. The inter-county theft strategy presumed that by crossing jurisdictional lines, the group could elude law enforcement, but the concerted efforts of regional agencies proved otherwise.

District Attorney Jeff Rosen lauded the collaborative efforts which saw 11 Northern California counties come together, "Criminals relied on the fact that, by traveling from county to county, they could escape arrest and accountability for their thefts," as per the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, DA Rosen added, "That trick won’t work anymore. Law enforcement has its own crew. If you steal from Santa Cruz and San Jose and Sacramento, you will spend time in prison in California." This unified front includes AB 1779, a law that became effective in January, enabling a single district attorney's office to prosecute organized retail theft spanning multiple counties.

The collected goods tallied a loss exceeding $65,000 from January through April of this year, with these items routinely sold at flea markets in locales like Oakland and San Jose. The multi-agency takedown included the Sheriff’s Office Retail Theft Task Force, the California Highway Patrol’s Organized Retail Theft Task Force, and other regional partners. Santa Clara County Sheriff Robert Jonsen told the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, "Retail theft doesn't just affect businesses—it impacts our entire community. We remain laser-focused on dismantling organized retail theft crews and holding offenders accountable." The Raid yielded not only stolen merchandise but also narcotics, and a South San Francisco storage unit filled with over a thousand items pilfered from Home Depot.
