A kayaking accident under No Hands Bridge at the American River Confluence triggered a large-scale search and rescue operation Friday afternoon, authorities said. The Placer County Sheriff's Office received a call around 5 p.m. on May 2 that one kayak had flipped, leaving two kayakers in peril. One was able to scramble to the safety of nearby rocks, but the other is still missing. "A search is currently underway for the second kayaker," stated a post on the Placer County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
The response saw not only Placer County's deputies and CAL FIRE NEU participating but also resources and personnel from Auburn State Recreation Area, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, and CHP - Auburn pooling together, looking for the person who is yet to be found as of their latest update. Despite having responded promptly to the scene, as the sun dipped below the horizon, the river's cold and rushing waters offered little solace to searchers and perhaps, a grim reminder of nature's indifference.
Local authorities have not yet released the names of those involved, pending notification of kin and as the search for the missing kayaker continues with urgency. The area around No Hands Bridge, known to outdoor enthusiasts for its scenic trails and challenging rapids, has become a site of methodical examination by rescue teams who combed both land and water.
Community members were quick to offer support and express concern on social media, following the office’s updates. Amid the flow of concern, posts echoed the hope for a favorable outcome, oftentimes punctuated with prayers. As of the latest report from the Placer County Sheriff's Office, the search for the missing kayaker is ongoing. With night falling, equipped with lights, the teams pushed on, showing a resolve that the darkness would not deter their efforts.
Anyone with information regarding the incident or the whereabouts of the missing kayaker is encouraged to contact the Placer County Sheriff's Office. Updates continue to come in, and we will provide additional information as it becomes available. As families and friends hold their breath, the community can only wait and hope that the missing individual is found safe.
