Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell spoke out against the extreme right-wing rally that took place at Cal Anderson Park. The event, which the Mayor described as a direct challenge to the inclusive values of Seattle, led to unrest and a response by local law enforcement. "Seattle is proud of our reputation as a welcoming, inclusive city for LGBTQ+ communities, and we stand with our trans neighbors when they face bigotry and injustice," Mayor Harrell said in a statement obtained by the city's official website.
The statement highlighted that the city triumphs when it demonstrates its values through words and peaceful protest. However, the peaceful nature of the counter-protests was disrupted when anarchists reportedly infiltrated the group, inciting violence. The Seattle Police Department made arrests and shut down the event early after anarchists infiltrated the group of counter-protesters and incited violence, according to Mayor Harrell.
In his response to the events, Mayor Harrell issued directives for a full review and a possible reconsideration of the permit process for public events. The Parks Department has been tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the permit application, looking for legal alternatives or adjustments that could avert similar situations in the future. In tandem, the SPD will be conducting an after-action report to better understand the planning, crowd management strategies, and to review all arrests and citations from the rally.
Mayor Harrell expressed gratitude for those standing up for the rights of LGBTQ+ communities without resorting to violence. He reiterated the city's dedication to supporting diversity and opposing national efforts to undermine the rights of trans and LGBTQ+ communities. "I am grateful for those who make their voices heard in support of our neighbors without resorting to violence. In the face of an extreme right-wing national effort to attack our trans and LGBTQ+ communities, Seattle will continue to stand unwavering in our embrace of diversity, love for our neighbors, and commitment to justice and fairness," he affirmed, as noted by the City of Seattle.
