Outdoor enthusiasts in Colorado Springs have something to look forward to as a new trail reroute project is set to begin this Sunday, May 4, at the Section 16 Trailhead. The Palmer Red Rock Loop Trail, cherished by hikers and bikers alike, will undergo construction to enhance its durability and accessibility. Notably, this initiative is part of a broader effort to bolster community engagement and environmental stewardship through the Pikes Peak Regional Crew Leader Training program.
According to the City of Colorado Springs, the construction will be completed off the current trail corridor, which is good news for the local outdoor community, meaning no closures will be necessary. Completion is slated for the end of June, just in time for peak summer visits. The project's scope includes replacing the existing steps with a 400-foot sustainable trail, addressing the ongoing maintenance challenges and wear from the elements that have taken a toll over time.
Speaking to the importance of the project, Colorado Springs Parks Trail Project Specialist Dan Allen emphasized both the immediate and educational benefits, "We are excited to construct this trail reroute where we have the opportunity to not only enhance the trail system but provide education on proper trail construction and restoration to emerging trail leaders." He said, as per City of Colorado Springs, "This new trail will provide a safer, more sustainable option for all users."
