A Sevier County man is behind bars after a violent incident that claimed the life of his brother and their family dog. According to WVLT, 36-year-old Thomas Josha Carter was arrested after an altercation that resulted in multiple stab wounds to his brother, 41-year-old Jeffrey Andrew Todd. The grim series of events unfolded on Indian Gap Road, where, as reported by authorities, Carter also subjected the family dog to drowning, mutilation, and incineration prior to his brother's death.
This case has caught the community's attention not only due to its brutality but also for the mental health and substance abuse implications involved. In a statement obtained by WATE, the Sevier County Sheriff's Office indicated that deputies initially responded to a call about Carter experiencing a mental health crisis around 8 p.m. on Wednesday and were informed that he had a history of violence and drug use.
The series of events escalated when Carter's father and brother returned to the property after the dog had been killed. A physical confrontation ensued between the two brothers, leading to Jeffrey Todd sustaining fatal stab wounds. As noted by WBIR, after the stabbing, the victim was transported by his father to a nearby parking lot where emergency services were called.
The subsequent investigation by the Sevier County Sheriff's Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation led to Carter's arrest. He now faces charges of second-degree murder and aggravated animal cruelty and is awaiting a hearing in General Sessions Court; the Sevier County Jail confirmed the incarceration.
