Sevierville residents should prepare for a slight shift in their Monday morning commute next week. The Sevierville Police Department has announced via social media that a lane closure is scheduled on Dolly Parton Parkway for May 5th, to make way for the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Walk/Run. The westbound travel lane will be closed between Sevier County High School and Gondolier Italian Restaurant, from 8:45 a.m. to approximately 9:45 a.m.
This lane closure will likely impact traffic, so those who frequent this route may want to plan for alternative paths or allow for extra travel time. The police department's notice specifies, "The right westbound travel lane will be closed between Sevier County High School and Gondolier Italian Restaurant (964 Dolly Parton Parkway)." Given the event's time frame, the impact on traffic should be limited to the duration of the run/walk.
The purpose behind this temporary inconvenience is a noble one. The Torch Walk/Run is part of a series of events connected to the Special Olympics, a movement dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities through the joy of sport. This particular event symbolizes solidarity among law enforcement and the athletes, celebrating their courage and determination.
